Clyde the elk prefers bottled water, thank you very much from "The Denver Post"

If you saw an elk choose a bottle of water over city water or water from the mountains, what would you say? Clyde, the elk, will only have bottled water over any other water.

It's not clear who gave him his first bottle of water, but now he spurns the ranch's well and a 6,000-gallon tank of city water. He wraps his lips around a bottle if it's proffered by a human. Clyde is an elk in Wyman Living History Museum in Craig, Colorado. Clyde is a domesticated elk that drinks from a bottle of water only. His owner, Lou Wyman, says that Clyde probably likes the bottle more than the water because his mother was killed when he was a baby, so he was bottle fed. Now your probably asking yourself how did this Lou Wyman find Clyde? Well at the time, Wyman ran an elk ranch, supplying elk meat and hides. The elk teeth and antlers went to jewelry-makers, Wyman got out of the elk business 10 years ago, selling off the herd but keeping the newborn Clyde. He's now a massive bull with huge antlers and has become a big attraction at Wyman's museum. Sometimes he bugles—the male elk's call—when guests drive up.
Here is the website to find pictures of Clyde, you can also check out the Wyman Living History Museum website http://www.wymanmuseum.com/clyde.php

education

Shhh! I’m Googling My Facts… from 2cents worth:

Google is so hard to learn from because of all the fake or true but confusing web pages posted on Google. Like in this education article a kid in 7th grade was given an assignment to write a report on 9/11 he googled it and found conspiracy theory website(s). he came out thinking someone had bombed the buildings. This is a crucial problem for people in education, equipping students with the skills to critically evaluate the information that they encounter. It is probably the most frequent complaint that someone might hear from educators about the Internet, as they try to teach that which their students must learn.

As students we should use text books more than the we use the Internet because the Internet is full of fiction and the thing that we want top learn is so easy to find, sometimes. Also if use text books more then we will know how to use books more, because there are many more books on true things than the human brain can hold. Sure Google and other search sites can help out at times can't find it in a book, but it might be fake or it might be true in some ways, but not others.

Text books might be a painful experience too. They are so heavy and painful for most people to carry around, and sometimes you get home and find out you don't even need it for your homework or to study with. Also they don't always have the information you need or they don't give you all of the facts, just the ones that the writer(s) of the text book want you to know.

So when you get to your locker when school is over ask yourself, which one is better the Internet or the textbook, for your homework tonight. You know that the Internet is full of things that are not true, but the text book is heavy and you can't find that one thing you need to research.

local news

Finally it's snowing in the Mountains of Colorado!!!!! Several inches fell in Breckenridge and resorts around Breck. on September 17. While in Denver it was raining the best thing in the world was happening in the mountains, it is snow. I can't wait till ski season starts up again and I can feel that awesome feeling that I get when I strap on my skies and head up the mountain.

education

While I was reading 2cents worth I came across an interesting article. In Pennsylvania high schools plans to provide one laptop per student desk (cart of 25), a teacher laptop, a printer/ scanner, imaging software, productivity software, a web cam, an electronic whiteboard, a projector, up to three digital still cameras (per eligible school), up to five digital video cameras (per eligible school), Infrastructure (wireless network, servers), and technical support for the core classes. The state plans to spend $200 million dollars on this project. Some bad things about this, I think, is that the kids won't be able to write with a pen/pencil and paper. But they will be able to use their imagination more than someone could without a computer, and they will learn how to use a computer.

world news- ozone hole

While reading BBC News I found an article about the ozone hole and how a scientist says that we need to pick up the pace on protecting the ozone hole. Joe Farman the scientist who discovered the ozone hole over Antarctica says that we need to pick up the pace for protecting the ozone layer of the Earths atmosphere. The ozone layer blocks ultraviolet-B radiation from the Sun, which can cause skin cancers and other medical conditions, as well as harming wildlife. Many countries are starting to switch there chemicals, refrigeration, aerosol, and fire fighting to better ways for the atmosphere, and the countries that have just started switching say they will be done around 2010. One of he chemicals that humans have stared using to protect the ozone hole is called hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). There are many different types of HCHCs being used to help protect the ozone layer. Joe farman believes if we start using ways to help protecting the ozone layer and the hole then it should be fixed in about 10 years.

What else can we do to protect the ozone layer? How did Joe Farman discover the ozone hole in 1985?
